A new detective arrives in Midsomer to try and get to grips with the murder cases that arise in the area. DCI John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon), the cousin of the previous Midsomer detective, takes up the reigns from his relative and is immediately plunged into a murder investigation. When the sighting of a rare bird, the blue crested hoopoe, in the area is followed swiftly by the murder of the president of the local Ornithological Society, Barnaby and his assistant, DS Ben Jones (Jason Hughes), find themselves unravelling an incredible story of obsession and envy among local bird watchers.
