Episode 1, foregår tredive år før den oprindelige Star Wars-film. Filmen følger den unge Anakin Skywalker, en dreng med særlige kræfter, som uforvarende begiver sig ud på en rejse, der vil forvandle ham til den grusomme Darth Vader.
Obi-Wan Kenobi, den kloge gamle jedi fra de oprindelige film, er en beslutsom ung lærling, og Palpatine, som vi kender som Imperiets Kejser, er en ambitiøs senator i den Galaktiske Republik. Det er en æra, hvor jedi-ridderne vogter freden i en galakse i oprør, og hvor en ung dronning kæmper for at redde sit folk, alt imens en ukendt ondskab lurer i det fjerne.
