After touring throughout the world performing with Fred Karnos English Music Hall troupe, Chaplin began his film career in early 1914 starring in one and two reel comedies for Mack Sennetts Keystone Film corporation. Keystone was the cutting edge of film comedy and Sennett has made a fortune producing knockabout slapstick shorts. The spontaneous invention and rapid delivery schedule at Keystone gave Chaplin an intensive course in comedy film production. By adapting the broad,low class pantomimes of Karno to the rapid fire, cartoonish quality of the Keystones, Cahplin began to understand the dynamics of film acting and the importance of creating an identifiable and sympathetic character.
