Da kunstneren Francis Bacon en nat griber indbrudstyven George Dyer på fersk gerning, ringer han ikke til politiet, men siger til den unge mand: "Kom ind i seng, så gi´r jeg dig det, du vil have". For Dyer er præcis den elsker, den model og den inspiration, Bacon har søgt.
Men samtidig med at Bacons kunstneriske anseelse og formue vokser, betaler Dyer en høj pris. Han synker dybere og dybere ned i hængedyndet af sprut og piller i sin forgæves kamp for at blive anerkendt af Bacons snobbede kunstnervenner.
Love Is The Devil bevæger sig i det sprængfarlige felt mellem kunst, kærlighed og sex. I en overbevisende gengivelse af 60´ernes bohemeliv i Soho følger vi kunstnerne Francis Bacon og hans groteske følge af kunstnermodeller, trækkerdrenge og drankere i en dekadent rejse gennem undergrundsmiljøet, centreret omkring den notorisk berømte drukbule, The Colony Room Club.

John Maybury's dazzling debut feature is an extraordinarily powerful study of the passions that drove one of Britain's greatest and most controversial painters, Francis Bacon (Derek Jacobi - I Claudius). The film charts the turbulent and complex relationship that developed between the flamboyant artist and George Dyer (Daniel Craig - the new James Bond), the petty thief who became not only Bacon's lover but the model for some of his most intense and celebrated paintings. Set in the bohemian world of '60s Soho, 'Love is the Devil' perfectly captures the decadent underworld of artists' models, East End thugs and the infamous drinking den, The Colony Room, presided over by the hilariously foul-mouthed Muriel Belcher (Tilda Swinton - Orlando). |
