Et affaldsfirma har fået til opgave at transportere en russisk atombombe. En ansat i transportfirmaet har besluttet sig for, at spare firmaet for en masse penge ved at sende den farlige last med et almindeligt godstog. Toget er også fyldt med brandfarlige kemikalier, herunder metalisk natrium, som spontant antændes ved kontakt med vand.
Toget får mekaniske problemmer og kan ikke bremse, og der iværksættes et utal af redningsforsøg for at stoppe toget...

The lives of millions are on a collision course with disaster in this high-speed, special effects-laden motion picture.
A runaway freight train is on a fast track to Armageddon, hurtling out of control towards the city of Denver and packed with explosive chemicals and smuggled nuclear bomb. Destruction and derailment are not options- this train must be stopped and only one man is crazy enough to try and do it.. if he can live long enough. He's train wreck expert John Seger, a man who was born ready and whose time for action has come with a tick tock trip to terror as he battles to defuse the bomb and avoid a nuclear holocaust. The fast approaching horror provokes some in the city to violence and chaos, while others show extraordinary courage in the face of extra-ordinary catastrophe. But bravery isn't always enough and the unthinkable sometimes does happen.
